Can a urinary tract infection resolve on its own or do I have to take antibiotics?
af asked on Wed, 29 Aug, 2007
Based on my symptoms I think I have a UTI (urinary tract infection). I had one 2 months ago for the 1st time so the symptoms are still fresh in my head. Can I call and get a prescription or do I have to go in and get all the lab work done again? Better yet, can it resolve on its own? I don't have the money to go to another drs appointment and get labs done.

To the previous poster, They will clear up without antibiotics. How do you think the human race survived before the age of western medicine?
Original poster,
Drink cranberry juice. not the sugary "drink" or a "cocktail" go out and buy real cranberry juice. Drink lots of it and lots of water.
Basically what happens is the chemicals in cranberry juice stick to the bladder and urinary trak walls thus perventing the bacteria to stick to the walls. The bacteria cant stick and therefore the infection is flushed out.
"This latest research, conducted jointly between Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey and the University of Michigan, suggests that regular consumption of cranberry juice cocktail could reduce the potential for development of UTIs, thus decreasing the need for antibiotics. In this study, scientists tested the effectiveness of cranberry juice cocktail in disabling a number of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria, some of which are resistant to certain drugs. Preventing UTIs could potentially reduce the use of antibiotics, and subsequently reduce further development of antibiotic resistance.
"We found that when subjects consumed cranberry juice , their urine was capable of preventing not only susceptible, but antibiotic-resistant bacteria from attaching to the urinary tract," said Amy B. Howell, Ph.D., research scientist at Rutgers, and lead investigator of the study. "Cranberry acts to promote flushing of these problematic bacteria from the bladder into the urine stream, which should result in a lower rate of infection."

call your Dr. and explain your situation. alot of them will be willing to give you a prescription based on your symptoms as long as you are a patient. mine has done this for me when money was very tight.
you can also try taking huge doses of cranberry concentrate pills. (you can get them at walmart or a drugstore for about $7 a bottle.) take about 15 when you first get them, then 4 every few hours until the bottle is gone. it's safe because it is not a drug.
within about an hour after taking the first, large dose you should feel immense relief. but make sure to keep taking the smaller doses or the infection will come back. i use the whole bottle just to be safe. i've recommended this to friends also, and it only failed once, when my friend also had a kidney infection as well.
the cranberry works because there is a substance in cranberries that prevents the bacteria from adhering to the bladder walls, so your body can flush out the infection much easier.you have to take the concentrate though. drinking cranberry juice won't work. it is far too weak and also, the added sugar actually feeds the infection. good luck.

i feel ya.. UTI's suck! but they do not clear up on their own~ depending on how many time's you have gone to that particular office... your doctor may be able to call you in a perscription. Call to speak with him/her and tell them you were there a couple of months ago and that you're positive u have a UTI and he/she may just call you in your meds. My doctor has done it for me before.

You need to be seen by a doctor ASAP! It could cause damage to your kidneys.

Why suffer needlessly? Go to the pharmacy and pick up an over the counter medication like Uristat. If it gets worse, call your doctor.

An urinary tract infection wil certainly not go away. It will possibly spread and cause nephritis or pyelonephritis. You should see your doctor immediately and take the correct antibiotic medicine (Probably nalydixic acid) sometimes sold under the brandname Pirifur. Please take your medicine for at least 7 to 8 days EVEN AFTER THE PAIN HAS DISAPPEARED. All the best. Dr. House

i am not sure if it would "cure itself" if the bacteria (or infection) content in your urinary track system is high. if you don't have money for the tests, just have your prescription re-filled, also you might try drinking cranberry juice. i read somewhere that there is a chemical in cranberry juice that helps in preventing/eliminating UTI. get well soon.
